Naturally Talkative Personality

One of the most common reasons why some people may talk a lot at meetings is their innate personality. The extroverted person is energized by interacting with people, and talking is a natural outlet for this energy. These people are also inclined to "think out loud" to sort through concepts and test their ideas. If the group encounters a quiet spell, these people will feel some discomfort and begin the conversation again. There is no malice intended by this behavior, it is simply a natural part of who they are. Seen in a positive light, it is one of the "gifts" they bring to the team.

The downside is that they may tend to dominate discussions, retarding the input of other members who may have important information for the team. When this occurs, any team member can employ a technique called "gatekeeping."

Gatekeeping is simply "closing the gate" on the mouth of the talker so that it can be opened on another person who wants to contribute to the conversation. Some teams use a time-out sign with their hands to signify that the talker should stop. Then invite the other members into the conversation.

As part of their ongoing development, teams should receive training on personality type and how it affects team functioning. This kind of training is almost always effective in controlling the problem, as well as enlightening team members on other aspects of their relationships.
